Goodies from Bill the Butcher

Not only does eating Paleo require you to be completely conscious of what you eat, you also become quite aware of where your food comes from. You ARE what you eat, after all. And if you’ve seen the movie Food, Inc., you’ll know exactly what I’m talking about. (And if you haven’t seen it yet – you definitely should!)

I used to consider grocery shopping a simple “errand.” I would go to one store for food.

Now, we shop more at PCC, sometimes at Trader Joes, and have found an all-time new favorite butcher: Bill the Butcher. Jake went there for the first time a couple of weeks ago, and came home with some delicious meat. I knew I was a true Paleo Girl when he walked in the door and my mouth started to water (and not just because he’s so cute… I was staring at the gorgeous white-paper-wrapped goodies in his hand). That night, we cooked a delicious grass-fed Rib-Eye Steak. Besides the great cuts of meat, it’s great knowing that he gets all of his inventory from a variety of local farmers. You can choose from grass-fed beef, pasture-fed pork, to scavenger chickens and eggs.

Shopper’s Tip: Be sure to ask him for specifics on your purchases, as some items may be organic, but not free-range (such as the egg selection) and they use different rubs and flavors on different items. Always know what you’re eating!

So, here we are in modern society and I’m feeling more than ever like a hunter-gatherer. I constantly am taking inventory on our meat & veggies, and planning meals in advance. On Saturday after a long day of work, when we most wanted to rent a movie and cozy up on the couch, we traveled 30 miles round trip to Bill the Butcher’s for a week’s worth of meat. And today after an early morning shoot, we came home and I was back out at PCC for a few more organic veggies to add to the pile. It’s tiring, but also exhilarating and fun at the same time. It feels good to take control of what you’re eating. And we’re so grateful to shops like Bill the Butcher for doing the heavy legwork for us. If it weren’t for him, we’d be visiting farms & ordering whole cows (which is just fine, but takes a bit more planning for).
